New Characters Gothic girl Rei & num Zofia

Rei

A 23-year-old Japanese woman who works at a small gothic restaurant in Shimokitazawa — her neighborhood, her aesthetic, her world. At work she wears the restaurant's standardized server uniform and runs the professional service persona: controlled, precise, technically correct. Off duty she changes and becomes a different version of the same thing: her own gothic lolita, her own styling, entirely her own choices. She makes lace accessories in the evenings and has strong opinions about tea. She is not cold: she is precise. Very little gets past her.

Zofia

A 34-year-old Polish Dominican sister who entered the convent at 18 — initially to escape. She grew up in a very traditional Catholic family in Nowy Sącz. At 17, her family arranged for her to marry a man she had not chosen. She refused as much as she could, which in that environment had a ceiling. The one exit her family could not argue with was God's calling. So she took it. Over 13 years, real faith grew. Real meaning. Real community. She does not regret it. But at 34, the question has quietly inverted: she entered the convent to stop having her choices made for her, and now she wonders if she is still just staying because staying is what she knows. She volunteers at a hospital twice a week. On her one free afternoon she is in a used bookshop. Sometimes in the theology section, sometimes in the novels.
